Magomed Abdusalamov Gets Record $22 Million from State of New York

In 2013, boxer Magomed Abdusalamov suffered brain damage following a fight. 

He was not rushed to a hospital following the post-fight medical check, but ended up taking a cab to a near by hospital.

Abdusalamov’s family filed a lawsuit claiming gross negligence, medical malpractice, and recklessness by the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC), the staff, and ringside physicians.

The lawsuit alleged that the actions of the NYSAC doctors resulted in a delayed diagnosis and treatment. Abdusalamov ended up having a blood clot in his brain,  and underwent surgery the night of the fight.

He had several strokes, was in a coma, and was hospitalized for over 10 weeks. He is still paralyzed on his right side, and lost his ability to walk and speak properly.

The athlete’s poor condition led to a 32-month investigating, which resulted in a scathing report on the NYSAC.

Last week, New York State agreed to pay Abdusalamov and his family $22 million to settle the personal injury case. According the ESPN, it is the largest personal injury settlement in New York history.

Abdusalamov’s wife, Bakanay Abdusalamova, told ESPN, “I would trade all of the money to just bring back Mago as he was, but that’s not how it works, it cannot buy the happiness we had.”

The case has resulted in changes in the sport of MMA. New York now requires promoters to take out $1 million traumatic brain injury insurance policies on every fighter on every card.
