Boat Accident Kills Mother of Uber CEO

Mother of Uber CEO Killed in Fatal Boating Accident

Travis Kalanick, the CEO of Uber, is mourning the loss of his mother after a fatal boating accident on Friday, May 26.

Uber stated, “Last night Travis and his family suffered an unspeakable tragedy. His mother passed away in a devastating boating accident near Fresno and his father is in serious condition. Our thoughts and prayers are with Travis and his family in this heartbreaking time.”

Both of Kalanick’s parents were out on Pine Flat Lake, in Fresno, CA, where they have been longtime boaters. Between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m their boat hit a rock and later sank. The Sheriff’s office said the couple was found on shore, but unfortunately Kalanick’s mother, Bonnie, had already passed away. His father, Donald, was found in serious condition and was flown to a nearby hospital. He is now in stable condition.

Travis was close to both of his parents. Friends of the family say they have always supported him in his various tech startups, including Uber which has grown to an international operation with a market value of almost $70 billion.

Safety Tips to Prevent Boating Accidents

Unfortunately not all boating accidents are preventable, but there are things to check to make sure you are being as safe as possible. Always check the local weather conditions before taking a boat out. If there are heavy changing winds or sudden drops in temperature it is best to head in. Educate yourself on the water you are boating in. Ask local experts if there are areas to avoid due to shallow water or rocky areas. Also, make sure there are a proper amount of lifejackets on board. Another tip is to take a boating safety course, even if your state doesn’t require it.
